By pleading guilty and promising to seek help for his addictions, Ed had hoped for a lesser sentence - even a suspended one. The judge didn’t take as much pity on him as he had hoped, not with the pictures he’d seen of Ed’s wife - battered and bloody. The sentence was five years although he only served two of them due to his “good behaviour”. During that time he wrote letter after letter to his wife but she didn’t reply. Eventually he did get some mail though. Notice of an intent to divorce.

When his sentence was complete, a taxi was organised to get Ed from the prison to his home. He wasn’t sure what to expect when the car pulled into his driveway.

‘Did you want me to wait here?’ the taxi-driver - a young man named Tom Crighton - asked. ‘You know - just in case you don’t want to stay here tonight.’ Tom had been a taxi-driver for a number of years now and hated it. He had always wanted more from his life - to write scripts and make films - but it had never worked out for him. This job was supposed to be a means to an end and yet here he was - stuck with no way out.

His passenger didn’t answer him as he climbed from the car.

‘Tell you what,’ Tom called, ‘I’ll wait here for five minutes…’

The passenger door slammed shut.

Ed knew she wouldn’t be there, nor his daughter, but he hoped that there’d at least be a letter saying where he could contact them. His heart sank when he walked in and found the house stripped of everything. The only thing left: A bottle of whiskey with a red bow around it. A note next to it: May it be the one to finally kill you.
